AI Has a Real Footprint—but It Isn’t the Main Driver of Climate Change

Reputable energy institutions agree on one point: data-center electricity demand is projected to grow sharply this decade, and AI is a major catalyst. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has highlighted that global data-center electricity consumption could more than double toward 2030—reaching roughly 945 TWh—and that AI-optimized data centers may grow more than fourfold.

Yet the same analysis carries an important nuance: even with rapid growth, the additional emissions impact depends heavily on how that electricity is generated—fossil fuel-heavy grids versus cleaner power—and remains relatively small when viewed within the total global energy system.

More fundamentally, global warming is still driven mainly by long-standing, large-scale sources. IPCC (AR6) synthesis indicates that global greenhouse gas emissions in 2019 were dominated by the energy sector, industry, agriculture/forestry and land use, transport, and buildings. In other words, AI matters—but it cannot replace coal power, heavy industry, and transport as the primary forces shaping climate outcomes.

Why Is AI So Easy to Blame?

AI is new, highly visible, and often feels overwhelming. It shows up everywhere—from classrooms to offices—making it an easy symbol for “technology gone too far.” When electricity bills rise and headlines claim “data centers are multiplying,” the human mind gravitates toward a simple villain rather than older, less visible culprits like fossil fuel dependency and inefficient infrastructure.

But scapegoating has a cost: it creates the illusion that we’ve found the problem—while our core consumption patterns continue unchanged. The result is a moral comfort trap: we condemn AI as climate-harmful, then immediately return to high-volume digital habits that run continuously, every day.

The Uncomfortable Reality: Daily Video Scrolling Is the Switch We Keep Turning On

IEA tracking of “data centres & data transmission networks” suggests that data centers and transmission networks each account for around 1–1.5% of global electricity use. This is significant—but not the world-swallowing monster implied by sensational posts.

What’s more revealing is where energy is consumed in online video. For streaming, a large share of energy isn’t spent in distant server farms—it is spent on the user side: televisions, phones, monitors, and the networks supporting them. IEA’s analysis of the carbon footprint of streaming video has found that the viewing device can account for the majority of energy consumption, followed by transmission networks, with data centers making up a smaller share.

This explains a striking contradiction:
• People can be genuinely outraged that “AI is warming the planet,”
• while also spending tens of minutes to hours daily on video feeds—keeping screens bright, decoding video, and transmitting data continuously—activities that sustain a steady stream of energy demand.

“AI vs TikTok” Is the Wrong Question—The Right Question Is: What Do You Run Continuously?

If someone uses AI occasionally for short text queries, their personal impact may be relatively small compared with a habit of continuous video consumption. On the other hand, heavy AI use—especially image/video generation, long multi-step reasoning, or automated workflows running at scale—can materially increase demand. The key point is simple:

Total impact depends on duration and workload intensity—not on whether something is labeled “AI” or “social media.”

A Fairer Framework: Stop Choosing a Single Scapegoat—Optimize the Whole Digital Ecosystem

A more persuasive and honest approach is to hold multiple truths at once:
• AI’s impact is real and growing, and it must be addressed through transparency, model efficiency, hardware optimization, and a shift toward cleaner electricity.
• Everyday digital habits—especially video streaming—carry significant “hidden” energy costs, much of which is driven by our own devices and screen time.
• The largest climate levers remain structural—power generation, industry, transport, and building efficiency—so public debate and policy cannot afford to drift away from these pillars.

Conclusion

AI is not innocent. But “AI is causing global warming” is an overly simplistic conclusion for a complex system—and it can become an excuse to ignore the part of the equation we control most directly: daily digital behavior, especially the always-on consumption of video and constant device use.
