University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Introduces Groundbreaking Master’s Program in Biomedical Image Computing

URBANA, IL (FreePR.org) -- The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) proudly announces the launch of its Master of Science in Biomedical Image Computing (M.S. in BIC) program. This innovative degree offers specialized training at the intersection of biomedical imaging, machine learning, and high-performance computing. The 36-credit-hour curriculum spans three semesters, integrating theoretical and practical knowledge to prepare students for leadership roles in this dynamic field. Applications for the inaugural Fall 2022 cohort are now open.
The field of biomedical image computing is expanding rapidly, driven by advancements in machine learning and imaging technologies. "We are thrilled to launch this program, which uniquely combines foundational imaging science with cutting-edge machine learning to address challenges in biomedical imaging," said Professor Mark A. Anastasio, head of the Department of Bioengineering and co-director of the program.
Developed by experts at UIUC’s Grainger College of Engineering, the curriculum blends computational imaging with machine learning applications. A key component of the program is a capstone project, where students will tackle real-world challenges using actual biomedical data. This hands-on experience will enhance graduates’ readiness for impactful careers in industry and research.
“Our goal is to equip a new generation of leaders with the skills and expertise to meet the increasing demand for talent in biomedical image computing,” said Professor Fan Lam, co-director of the M.S. in BIC program. The program is designed to be accessible, welcoming applicants with undergraduate degrees in engineering or quantitative disciplines, regardless of prior expertise in imaging or machine learning.
UIUC has a rich history of pioneering advancements in imaging science. The university's legacy includes contributions from ultrasound innovators William Fry and Floyd Dunn, whose work transformed ultrasound into a safe diagnostic tool. Paul Lauterbur, another Illinois professor, revolutionized medical imaging with his development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), earning a Nobel Prize in 2003.
Students in the program will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including Everitt Laboratory, the Biomedical Imaging Center, the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. These resources will provide students with unparalleled opportunities to engage with cutting-edge imaging and computational technologies.
