Physicians for Informed Consent Introduces New Educational Materials Highlighting MMR Vaccine Risks Compared to Measles, Mumps, and Rubella
New measles data help better compare disease risks to vaccine risks
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (FreePR.org) -- Physicians for Informed Consent (PIC), an organization committed to transparent and evidence-based vaccine information, has released a comprehensive new collection of documents to help physicians, policymakers, and the public better understand the risks associated with measles, mumps, rubella, and the MMR vaccine. The materials include data sourced from the National Center for Health Statistics and expand on PIC’s existing library of infectious disease and vaccine resources.
The release features two key documents: a Disease Information Statement (DIS) for measles, mumps, and rubella, and a Vaccine Risk Statement (VRS) for the MMR vaccine. These resources aim to clarify the relative risks and provide crucial data to support informed decision-making.
Updated Data and Key Insights
“Our first Measles DIS, published in 2017, highlighted a pre-vaccine measles mortality rate of 1 in 1,000 reported cases or 1 in 10,000 total cases,” said Dr. Shira Miller, founder and president of Physicians for Informed Consent. “The latest data reveals a pre-vaccine mortality rate of approximately 1 in 90,000 total cases among children without vitamin A deficiency.”
Highlights from the New Documents Include:
Most cases of measles, mumps, and rubella are mild.
Pre-vaccine fatality and disability rates were extremely low in the United States:
Measles: 1 in 93,000 cases (0.001%) with normal vitamin A levels resulted in permanent disability or death.
Mumps: 1 in 66,000 cases (0.002%) were fatal or caused permanent disability.
Rubella: 1 in 210,000 cases (0.0005%) contracted after birth resulted in fatality.
Immunity from the MMR vaccine diminishes over time:
By age 15, about 60% of vaccinated children may be susceptible to measles infection and transmission.
Within 19 years, approximately 50% may become susceptible to mumps.
Over 30% could lose immunity to rubella within 15 years.
Safety studies of the MMR vaccine lack statistical power. A Cochrane Library review of over 60 studies concluded that the design and reporting of safety outcomes were largely inadequate.
The National Academy of Medicine (formerly IOM) has not ruled out a connection between the MMR vaccine and serious health conditions, including neurological disorders (e.g., encephalopathy, meningitis, multiple sclerosis), autoimmune diseases (e.g., chronic arthritis), fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Seizures associated with the MMR vaccine occur in approximately 1 in 640 children, a rate about five times higher than seizures caused by measles infection.
The MMR vaccine has not been definitively proven to be safer than measles, mumps, or rubella.
Educational Resources for Better Decision-Making
The new materials provide detailed comparisons of disease and vaccine risks, empowering individuals to make informed choices. “These documents are designed to fill the knowledge gap and encourage constructive conversations about vaccine safety and disease management,” added Dr. Miller.
