Florida Voters Deliver Landslide Wins for Conservation, Securing Nearly $350 Million for Healthy Lands and Waters

Floridians unite to protect nature, approving record-setting conservation measures across the state.

TAMPA, Fla. (FreePR.org) -- In a resounding show of support for conservation, voters across Florida approved ballot measures on Election Day that will channel nearly $350 million into protecting the state’s lands and waters over the next 20 years. The Trust for Public Land (TPL) and the Live Wildly Foundation, two nonprofit organizations dedicated to advancing conservation and outdoor access, applauded this historic achievement, which underscores the deep bipartisan commitment to preserving Florida’s natural resources.

A Record-Setting Election for Conservation

The conservation measures, appearing on ballots in Clay, Lake, Osceola, and Martin counties, passed by overwhelming margins. In Lake County, voters delivered a staggering 80% approval rate, the highest ever for a ballot measure in the county’s history.

"It’s inspiring to see Floridians prioritize clean water, wildlife habitat, and outdoor recreation," said Will Abberger, Director of Trust for Public Land’s Conservation Finance Program. "These investments will pave the way for impactful land protection projects in these counties for years to come."

The successful measures in Florida are part of a larger national effort by TPL, which helped communities secure $16 billion in funding for land and water conservation across the United States.

Broad Impact Across Florida’s Counties

The four ballot measures not only ensure millions in local funding but also position the counties to receive additional grants from state and federal conservation programs, amplifying the impact of the initiatives.

"At a time when political divisions dominate the headlines, these victories highlight how conservation unites voters from all walks of life," said Meredith Budd, Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Live Wildly Foundation. "Floridians recognize that protecting our lands and waters is essential to the health of our communities, economies, and ecosystems."

Economic and Environmental Benefits

Florida’s outdoor recreation industry is a cornerstone of the state’s economy, supporting 485,000 jobs and generating $3.5 billion in annual tax revenue. State parks and trails alone contribute an additional $3.6 billion to local economies and provide employment for 50,000 people. Furthermore, Florida’s agricultural lands—home to nearly 50,000 farms and ranches—generate $8 billion annually, showcasing the vital intersection of conservation and economic growth.

Highlights of the Approved Ballot Measures

Clay County: Voters authorized $45 million in bonds, generating over $3 million annually for 20 years to protect drinking water sources, conserve wildlife habitats, support working forests and farms, reduce flooding, and expand outdoor recreation. The measure passed with 73% approval.

Lake County: A $50 million bond was approved, providing $4 million annually to safeguard water resources, wildlife corridors, and recreational spaces. The measure achieved an unprecedented 80% approval.

Osceola County: Voters backed a $70 million bond, delivering $5 million annually to acquire, manage, and restore natural areas, ensuring clean water, wildlife habitat preservation, and expanded outdoor recreation. The measure passed with 84% approval.

Martin County: Residents approved a sales tax projected to raise $183 million over ten years for initiatives such as cleaning waterways, protecting drinking water, preserving wildlife habitats, supporting farmers, and enhancing ecotourism. The measure passed with 64% approval.

A Collaborative Vision for Florida’s Future

The approval of these measures demonstrates a shared commitment among Floridians to safeguard the state’s natural beauty and resources for future generations.

"Whether it’s protecting drinking water, creating recreational spaces, or conserving wildlife habitats, these measures are a testament to the power of community action," said Budd.

With this funding, Florida’s counties are poised to implement transformative projects that will preserve the state’s ecological and economic vitality while fostering greater access to the outdoors.
