Thousands of Youth Visit Porto Holocaust Museum for International Holocaust Remembrance Day Amid Tight Security
Approximately 2,000 young people visited the Holocaust Museum in Porto to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The museum, which had been closed to the public since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel due to safety concerns for visitors and the local Jewish community, reopened under heightened security measures to ensure the safety of participants throughout the day.
PORTO, Portugal (FreePR.org) -- Last Friday, in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Holocaust Museum in Porto welcomed approximately 2,000 middle- and high-school students from schools across Portugal. The event was moved up by a day from the designated date in 2005 by the UN General Assembly to pay tribute to the six million Jews who lost their lives at the hands of the Nazis between 1938 and 1945.
Security was heightened throughout the day as the museum, which had been closed to the public since the Hamas attack on Israel in October, reopened its doors to the youth visitors. The safety of both visitors and the local Jewish community was a top priority.
During their visit, the students participated in a program designed by museum staff to educate them on the genocide that took place in Europe. Each school conducted its own memorial ceremony, which included lighting a candle in the museum's Names Room where the names of thousands of Holocaust victims are documented.
Since its establishment three years ago, the Porto Holocaust Museum has hosted around 150,000 young visitors. The museum is the only one of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula and offers a detailed look at the events leading up to, during, and after the Holocaust. Exhibits include recreated sleeping cells from Auschwitz and personal artifacts from survivors who found refuge in Porto.
Director of the museum, Michael Rothwell, commented, "Each year, around 50,000 students from schools all across the country visit the museum, which accounts for approximately 5% of school children in Portugal. Their understanding and compassion towards the history we share is truly heartwarming." Rothwell, whose grandparents perished in Auschwitz, feels a deep connection with the visitors who come to learn and pay their respects at the museum.
