Aviation Attorney Says Recent Fatal Plane Crashes Highlight Need for Greater Scrutiny of Aircraft Maintenance and Safety Protocols
Nashville, TN (FreePR.org) -- Two deadly aviation accidents occurring just days apart have renewed questions about aircraft maintenance, emergency preparedness, and operator safety practices as federal investigators work to determine what went wrong.
On June 16, a Cessna Citation Latitude business jet traveling from San José del Cabo, Mexico, to Austin, Texas, crashed near Laredo after the crew reported mechanical issues and requested an emergency landing. According to reports, the pilots advised air traffic controllers that the aircraft had lost power and was running low on fuel before it went down on Loop 20, striking a truck and erupting into flames.
One passenger, entrepreneur Joshua Baer, was killed. Three teenagers, both pilots, and a dog survived the crash. The truck driver suffered injuries. Witnesses at the scene reportedly rushed to assist survivors, breaking through the aircraft's windshield and doors to help occupants escape.
The Texas crash came just three days after a separate tragedy near Butler Memorial Airport in Missouri, where a Pacific Aerospace 750XL operated by Skydive Kansas City crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 12 people on board, including the pilot and 11 skydivers.
Federal investigators have not linked the two accidents, and the causes remain under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
However, aviation attorney Keith Williams, founder of Keith Williams Law Group, says the incidents underscore the importance of rigorous maintenance and inspection procedures across all sectors of aviation.
"These accidents are not related, but they serve as a reminder that every aircraft operator has a responsibility to ensure planes are properly maintained and thoroughly inspected before every flight," Williams said. "Investigators will be looking closely at maintenance records, mechanical systems, fuel-related issues, and whether there were any warning signs before these aircraft left the ground."
Williams cautioned against drawing conclusions before investigators complete their work but noted that maintenance records often play a critical role in understanding aviation accidents.
"When an aircraft experiences a serious in-flight emergency, one of the first questions investigators ask is whether there were any mechanical issues that could have been identified or addressed earlier," Williams said. "The answers are typically found in inspection reports, maintenance logs, and operational records."
The Texas aircraft was operated by NetJets, a fractional private jet ownership company. Williams said the incident also highlights the broader responsibility operators have to prioritize safety above all else.
"Aircraft are entrusted with human lives every day," Williams said. "Regardless of whether a flight is commercial, private, or recreational, safety must remain the highest priority."
