Aviation Attorney Blasts FAA, Boeing Over Relaxed Inspection Schedule After Deadly UPS Crash
Nashville, TN (FreePR.org) -- A Tennessee aviation attorney is calling out Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) after federal investigators revealed that inspection schedules tied to a deadly UPS cargo plane crash had been significantly relaxed before the disaster.
During a recent National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) hearing into the November 5, 2025 UPS crash outside Louisville, Kentucky, investigators learned that the FAA approved Boeing’s request to extend inspection intervals on critical engine components — despite relying on outdated data and without fully understanding the safety risks involved.
The crash killed 15 people after one of the aircraft’s engines separated from the wing shortly after takeoff, sending the plane into nearby buildings.
According to testimony presented at the hearing, Boeing successfully requested that inspections be extended from every 19,900 takeoff-and-landing cycles to every 29,260 cycles. Investigators said the change was intended, in part, to streamline maintenance scheduling and reduce aircraft downtime.
The NTSB also revealed that both Boeing and the FAA failed to recognize that extending the inspection schedule could increase the risk of catastrophic failure involving the steel bearing, metal sheath, and engine-mounting lugs that secure the engine to the wing.
“This is exactly what happens when efficiency and cost-cutting are allowed to outweigh safety,” said Keith Williams of The Keith Williams Law Group. “Federal regulators and the manufacturer signed off on a relaxed inspection schedule without fully understanding the consequences, and people lost their lives because of it.”
Williams pointed to testimony indicating that three separate aircraft experienced engine separations after the inspection intervals were extended.
“The warning signs were there,” Williams added. “There is no reason to gamble with aircraft inspections when lives are on the line every single flight.”
The NTSB investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
